Learning and Growing at KAIST 2024

This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with exceptionally talented individuals at the Institute for basic science (IBS) .My internship at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s Biomedical Mathematics Lab marked a pivotal point in both my academic journey and professional development.
During this internship, I worked on optimizing mathematical models in real-time for predicting alertness. I focused on using MATLAB Coding to enhance the accuracy of the alertness predictions by integrating sleep pressure and circadian rhythm parameters. By applying the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to these complex nonlinear systems, I aimed to improve our understanding of how sleep and circadian processes influence cognitive performance. This work has important implications for fields where managing fatigue is crucial, such as occupational health and transportation.
A special thank you to Dr. JaeKyoung Kim my professor and academic advisor, for his unwavering support and guidance. Your insights and mentorship were invaluable in helping me navigate through challenges.
I would also like to sincerely thank my mentor, Yun Min Song, who responded to all my doubts with patience and helped me through the whole process. Your expertise and feedback were vital for my understanding and success.
This internship has not only enhanced my technical and communication skills but also broadened my understanding of the real-life applications of mathematical modeling. I’m excited to carry on what I’ve learned and apply it in the near future in whatever way applicable.
